Request for Artist Proposals
Street Pole Banner Project

The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission invites artists to submit proposals for nine original portraits celebrating the achievements and legacies of nine African American doctors, nurses, and medical professionals who shattered barriers and left an indelible mark on history. The selected artworks will be duplicated on street pole banners that will line Michigan Ave in the medical corridor (view the locations here). This initiative is co-sponsored by Roswell Park and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

Entries are due April 30, 2024

Submission guidelines:

  • Design specifications must allow for enlargement to be displayed on a 30" X 96” banner.  Artists must be capable of creating and submitting high-quality digital files.

  • Designs should draw inspiration from photographs of the featured medical professionals, available here. The designs are intended to replace existing photos on the banners, as shown here. Note that we are seeking designs of the medical professionals' portraits rather than full banners.

  • Artists may use any medium to create the imagery, but the submitted artwork must be accompanied by a  digital file that can be used in a banner.

  • Artwork should be in portrait (vertical) orientation only. Keep the design simple, as it will be incorporated onto banners with additional information. Avoid including any text or logos on the artwork; all other information will be added later.

  • Submit a digital file of your artwork, not exceeding 25 MB for each image. Please zip or compress large files.

  • Include a brief biography and explain why your artwork is particularly fitting for the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor.

Submission Requirements:

Artists are required to submit the following for consideration:

  • Name

  • Address

  • Phone

  • Email

  • Two to three examples or draft version of a portrait

  • Bio, social media link, website

  • Fee requirement for designing and producing nine portraits for the Corridor’s use.  This fee should factor in both the creation of the portraits as well as the rights for the Corridor to use them in future marketing efforts.

The selection committee, appointed by the Corridor, will make the final selection. The chosen artist will have the opportunity to provide revisions for reproduction. Selected artworks may be featured on the Corridor's social media platforms, with all copyrights reserved for the Corridor. Final work produced by the contracted artist for this project will be the property of the Corridor. Proposals should factor this into the fee requirements.
