Monday, January 20, 2025

Join us Monday, January 20, 2025 to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with Voices of the Corridor: An Oral History Project. This inspiring event celebrates Dr. King’s enduring impact on resilience, justice, and compassion while fostering reflection, hope, and unity on this significant day.

This program also marks the official kickoff of a larger initiative that will culminate in the Smithsonian-sponsored traveling exhibition, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America, coming to the Corridor. Adapted from the Smithsonian’s American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith exhibition, this traveling exhibit features historical and contemporary photographs, archival video, multimedia interactives, and artifacts like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest materials.

Attendees of the MLK Day event can:

  • Learn about our exciting new oral history initiative.

  • Participate in history-related activities.

  • Sign up to share their own oral history, which may become part of the upcoming exhibition.

  • (Depending on availability) Record a brief oral history on-site during the event.

Oral histories given on MLK Day will be limited to 10 minutes, but those wishing to share longer stories can schedule an appointment to return at a later date. This initiative invites community members to add their voices to a growing archive of stories celebrating civil rights, diversity, and democracy.

The program will feature special guest speakers:

  • Tiffany Gaines, Associate Curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, who will share her unique insights into the importance of oral history.

  • Solar Ingram, author of In the Shadows of Her Praise, will celebrate the launch of her impactful new book. Ingram will discuss her journey of living and working in the Corridor, how it inspired her path to becoming an author, and share a captivating reading from her book.

This interactive program will explore the power of oral history in preserving civil rights, diversity, and democracy. It’s an invitation to add your voice to a growing archive of stories that reflect our collective journey toward justice and equity.

In addition to the day’s programming, we’re proud to return with our annual hat and glove giveaway, helping those in need stay a little warmer this winter.
