May 25 was a weighty date for Demetria Hester.

It marked one year since George Floyd’s murder — and four years since Jeremy Christian attacked Hester, now a prominent Black Lives Matter activist, at a MAX station in Portland.

Christian would go on to stab three men the next day, killing two of them, in a horrific attack that drew international condemnation.

Hester, 47, marked the anniversary of Floyd’s death and Christian’s initial attack in Buffalo, New York — her latest stop on a cross-country journey to visit sites significant to Black history and the abolition of slavery.
