About the Event
UB CDI Distinguished Visiting Scholar in Art (2021-2022), Crystal Z Campbell, will have an Open Studio on October 15th from 12-2pm in Studio 211 (CFA Building) to share several new paintings from their Notes From Black Wall Street Series. The Notes From Black Wall Street series invites a meditation on the future of our complicit fictions, suppressed memories, and united histories. Culled from institutional archives, these ruptured photographic histories feature Black residents of Greenwood after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Each photograph is translated via cuts, collage, ceramic shards, and paint applied as thick as scars. These paintings foreground self-fashioning and self-determination precisely one hundred years after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Yet, the narrative is always at stake. Will justice enter the frame upon a century?
